BRISTOL u3a: ‘LEARN , LAUGH, LIVE’

u3a is a UK-wide movement of locally run groups for people who are no longer in full-time work but want to continue to pursue their educational, social and creative interests in a friendly and informal environment. Founded in 1982, there are over 1000 u3a branches across the UK, including a thriving one in Bristol with 1400 members. All u3as are registered charities.

Bristol u3a hosts around a 150 interest groups, all volunteer-led, catering for a huge range of topics such languages, architecture, arts and theatre, walking, cycling, not to mention ukulele, tap dancing, origami, and there is even a daytime disco group! In fact, new groups are popping up all the time and any member can form one, with plenty of support provided. There are also a number of u3a social groups across greater Bristol and joining one of these is a great way to get to know people locally and to participate in a wide range of activities such as guided tours and visits, both within Bristol and further afield.

We have monthly meetings for all members in a city centre venue, the main feature being a speaker, but also offering the opportunity to socialise with u3a members from across the city. There are both ‘live’ speakers at the venue, and hybrid events which provide the option of watching from home on Zoom. The speakers’ topics are wide and varied, for example Gilbert and Sullivan, the works of art collected by Henry V111, climate change, the trans-Atlantic balloon race, and a recent fascinating talk on the work of a local hedgehog sanctuary.

Do have a look at what we have to offer on our Bristol u3a website or on Facebook. The joining fee is £20 a year for a single person, and £34 for a couple, which in my view is amazing value for money! Bristol u3a is entirely run by volunteers for the benefit of all our members, is friendly, welcoming and inclusive, and I believe can make a real and positive difference to people’s lives.
