Embracing Retirement Travel

When you were still working and thinking about your retirement, did you often think about where you might like to travel? Without the constrictions of annual leave, and feeling the benefit of a well-planned retirement, the world can become your oyster.

Planning can be daunting so here are some tips about where to start if you are thinking of traveling.

Planning and Budgeting

Every adventure begins with a solid plan. When it comes to retirement travel, thorough preparation is essential to ensure a hassle-free experience. Start by imagining your dream destinations. What experiences are on your bucket list? If you’re flying half-way around the world already, could you make the most of a multi-destination trip?

Budgeting for travel is crucial to making your adventures both enjoyable and sustainable. Have you including travel costs when evaluating your retirement income and expenditure? Decide how much you’re willing to spend and perhaps consider a contingency for those unexpected extra costs – or treats you didn’t know you needed!

Organising travel insurance is a must. If you are possibly organising a couple of trips (or more!) in a year, annual cover often works out cheaper than separate policies and will cover you for trips within the UK too, which many of us forget about. Some banks will offer annual cover as part of bank account deals so it’s worth checking with your bank.

As for other documentation, double check whether visas are needed and how long you must have left on your passport to travel, it can vary by country. Keep photocopies of important documents with you, just in case!

One of the perks of being a traveller in later life is access to various discounts and special offers. Many airlines, hotels, and attractions provide reduced rates for older travellers, making travel more affordable.

Always ask about available discounts and be aware you may be asked for proof of age.

Choosing Destinations

With your plans and budget in place, it’s time to decide where to go. Retirement travel offers endless possibilities. When you aren’t limited to traveling for a week or two, the opportunity to immerse yourself in different cultures presents itself.

Many people will already have a list of places they would love to visit – perhaps historical sites, for some it includes far-flung family members. If you are looking for inspiration, this Good Housekeeping list of ’11 Amazing Retirement Holidays’ might help!

If you’re interested in getting off the beaten track, speak to a travel adviser or look out for online blogs from others willing to share their hints and tips, best and worst experiences and must visit destinations.
