Frequently asked questions about legacy giving

Here are a few of the questions we find are commonly asked about giving to charities through making a Will. Leaving a legacy is a great way of giving something back - many charities rely heavily on legacy donations and all donations are meaningful.

Which charity should I leave a gift to?

The choice is entirely yours! With over 160,000 registered charities in the UK, you have a wide array to choose from, ranging from large, well-known organizations to smaller, local or community-based charities. You might not realize that some organizations, such as museums, hospices, and universities, are also charities. If you don’t have a favorite charity, consider what’s important to you. Perhaps a charity has supported you or a loved one, or there is a cause you feel strongly about.

Is there a minimum amount I have to leave?

No, the amount you leave to others or to charity is entirely your decision.

Can I only leave money to a charity?

No, you have three different options for gifts you can leave to charity:

Pecuniary gifts: A set amount of money.

Residuary gifts: A percentage or the entirety of your remaining estate after other specified gifts, costs, and taxes.

Specific gifts: A specific object, asset, or property.

You can discuss your preferences with us to ensure your wishes are clear.

Can I leave gifts to more than one charity?

Yes, you can leave gifts to multiple charities. In fact, it’s common for people to leave gifts to three different charities in their Will.

Can I decide how my gift is used by the charity?

Yes, but it’s best to discuss this with the charity first. Sometimes, a charity may not be able to use a gift in the way you intend, which could affect their ability to accept the gift.

Do I need to tell the charity that I'm leaving them a gift in my Will?

No, informing the charity is entirely optional. Many people choose not to notify their chosen charities. However, if you feel comfortable sharing this information, it can help the charity plan future activities more effectively.
