Charity Bowls Day 2021
On Wednesday 15th September, we arranged a fun afternoon of bowls in aid of St Peter’s Hospice. 22 of us took to the green in the glorious sunshine at Canford Bowling Club in Westbury on Trym to try our hand at the sport made famous by Sir Francis Drake.
We were split across four rinks, many of us playing for the very first time. Some were extremely impressive at how quickly they got to grips with the technique and others could do with a little more practice! At one point a jack (the little white ball) was launched high in to the air, narrowly avoiding the players!
The games were close – some closer than others – and after an hour or so, we retired to the club house to get out of the sun, pour a fresh cup of tea and face and the painstaking decision of whether to choose carrot cake or lemon cheesecake!
Many people bought raffle tickets throughout the afternoon and Richard had great pleasure in handing out the prizes that people had won alongside some prizes for the winning teams of the bowls competition.
Towards the end of the afternoon, there was a ‘spider’ competition where the jack was placed in the middle of the green and all competitors were spread out around the edge (with one foot in the ditch). The aim was to get your one bowl the closest to the jack to win a bottle. After a practice go, we were ready to launch and everyone threw their bowl at the sound of the bell! It’s very difficult to decipher the winner with so many thrown together but we got there in the end!
The final total raised on what was an absolutely brilliant day was £340. We couldn’t have raised this fantastic amount without everyone who turned up on the day to play, those that donated anyway and the support from St Peter’s Hospice and also Canford Bowling Club who helped to ensure the day ran without a hitch!
We’re hoping to make this an annual event so please do join us next year, it really was such a fun day! Thank you everyone!
